The lights flickered everywhere we walked,
they knew something that we did not ,
words flooded out of our mouths easily
and into the isolated air,
our volume made the lights flicker,
we stood silently atop a vacant ledge,
gradually our bodies inched closer
the lights flickered ,
went went our separate ways
the lights dimmed because we were apart ,
the lights knew what we felt in our crowded hearts,
but ignored the facts,
that he’s over there , I’m over here
we see each other about once a year
we discuss the what ifs,
the others we’ve both been with
and our personal problems not yet dismissed,
the lights watch us amused they flicker on and off,
waiting for us to see what we cannot
